We’ve been stuck in the supper rut for quite some time now. So many things I could make to eat, but 90% of them have dairy and we’re still living in dairy free land. I find myself perusing Pinterest or my recipe books for something different to eat. When making up this week’s menu sloppy joes caught my eye in the recipe book. I have not made them in forever. On the list they went.
Now I’m probably going to date myself with this one, but when I hear sloppy joes all I can think about is that 90’s song Adam Sandler sings about the lunch lady. Sloppy joes, slop, sloppy joes. Is it running through your head now to? If not follow this link and you can enjoy a good laugh too.
My husband would be fine with me just making Manwich. He swears they all taste the same, but I beg to differ. If we’re going to have sloppy joes it’s going to be my homemade ones. I’ve got to ask my Momma where this one came from as I’m not sure. Regardless they are yummy and quick in a pinch.
If I’ve sold you on them too, here’s what you will need
- 1 lb hamburger
- small onion or minced onion
- tomato sauce (8 oz)
- ketchup
- brown sugar
- mustard (liquid or dry)
- salt & pepper
- Worcestershire sauce
- vinegar
- green pepper, chopped (optional)
When I’m cooking something that I need to add ingredients quickly I like to lay out my measuring spoons and cups by the ingredient they go with. It just gives me one less thing to have to search for when it’s time to add the ingredients.
If you would like to use a raw onion and green peppers go ahead and prep them first. Dice a small onion decently small or to a size of your preference. My husband loves raw onions so I don’t have to worry how big I make them just so long as I leave some out for him to snack on while I cook. If you don’t care for onion make sure you dice it up small or just cheat and use minced onion. I do not like green peppers so I do not add them in. However if you do make sure to remove the seeds and dice them up as well.
Choose your favorite medium sized fry pan, spray the bottom with some pam, and add 1 pound of hamburger. While your hamburger browns, add in the onion you diced up or 1/2 Tablespoon of minced onion. If you want green pepper throw it in to cook too. Once your hamburger is browned you need to drain out the fat.
Now add in the remaining ingredients: 8 ounces tomato sauce, 1/2 cup ketchup, 1 Tablespoon brown sugar, 1 teaspoon mustard (dry or liquid), 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/8 teaspoon pepper, 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, and 1 Tablespoon white wine vinegar. Stir the ingredients until well combined.
That’s about it. You’re almost done!
Let it simmer 15-20 minutes stirring occasionally. All you’re letting it do is cook down some and the flavors blend together. And tah-dah! It’s done. Quick, easy, and soon to be delicious.
Normally we pair this with some regular potato chips. However, I killed half a bag of potatoes on the way to the truck from Walmart today; so it’s french fries for us. Yeah word to the wise, don’t put your bag of potatoes under the cart, even if you’ve already packed everything you can next to your toddler and around the car seat. It never ends well. My bag took a dive out the front and wedged itself between the cart and the road. Thus yummy yummy homemade french fries tonight.
